Tropical Plant Rentals is an Australian owned and operated indoor plant hire company with more than 50 years of experience styling workplaces and commercial environments.
Sustainability is not an add on, it is integral to how we grow, select and care for every plant.
By prioritising long lived, locally grown species and high-quality reusable planters, we offer a considered alternative to disposable floral arrangements. Our maintenance teams optimise service routes to reduce travel and emissions, while our plant lifecycle approach ensures greenery is continually reused, repurposed or rehomed, extending its life beyond the workplace and into homes and community organisations.

Ecofriendly indoor plant hire & green styling
Locally grown plants & sustainable materials
As a leading provider of indoor plant hire Australia wide, we prioritise locally grown plant species suited to the Australian climate, reducing transport emissions and improving plant longevity. Our reusable pots and modular planter systems are designed to minimise waste, supported by eco-friendly horticultural practices that avoid harsh chemicals wherever possible. Beyond aesthetics, indoor plants contribute to healthier interiors by releasing water vapour through transpiration, which can help regulate humidity and support occupant comfort. Studies, including research from NASA and published through Elsevier journals, indicate that indoor plants can assist in reducing certain airborne pollutants and improving overall indoor environmental quality. In addition our supply chain strategy focuses on reducing environmental impact while maintaining consistent high quality plant stock across all installations. We work closely with local growers to ensure seasonal availability and reduce long distance freight requirements which further lowers emissions associated with logistics. This approach supports regional horticulture businesses and strengthens local supply resilience while ensuring our clients receive fresh and healthy plants that thrive in interior environments ultimately this integrated approach ensures sustainability and performance remain central to every project we deliver while supporting long term environmental outcomes and resilience.
Water conservation & the DAMN system
Water efficiency is central to sustainable indoor plant hire Australia operations, particularly during peak summer demand. Industry guidance from the University of Arkansas indicates greenhouse production can require 1–2 quarts of water per square foot daily, which equates to approximately 41,000–83,000 litres per acre. To reduce reliance on mains water we developed the DAMN system, capturing and storing rainwater from our 2.2 hectare nursery. Water is held in on site dams and tanks with over 3 megalitres capacity. Runoff is also collected and reused for irrigation, creating a closed loop system that improves drought resilience and significantly reduces water waste. Find out more on Our Nursery. This system also allows us to stabilise seasonal water demand fluctuations while ensuring consistent plant health across all installations. By capturing rainfall at scale we reduce pressure on municipal water supplies and improve long term operational sustainability outcomes for our nursery operations. It also supports responsible resource management aligned with environmental best practice standards. Overall this approach demonstrates how water sensitive design supports both ecological resilience and operational efficiency in modern horticulture systems while reducing environmental impact and improving long term sustainability outcomes across the business.
Plant It Forward: native habitat restoration
Through our indoor plant hire Australia services, every new client and event contributes to our Plant It Forward program. For each installation we plant a native eucalyptus tree near Gunnedah in regional New South Wales known as the Koala Capital of Australia. Koalas primarily inhabit coastal regions of NSW but many populations are now fragmented due to habitat loss and remain under significant threat. Research from the NSW parliamentary inquiry highlights that habitat fragmentation is one of the most critical pressures on koalas and emphasises the importance of restoring connected habitat corridors. Our program supports this by helping to restore habitat connectivity through wildlife corridors spanning around 4 km. These corridors provide essential food sources shelter and safe passage for koalas and other native wildlife contributing to long term ecological recovery. Learn more about our Plant it forward program. This initiative also strengthens biodiversity outcomes across fragmented landscapes by improving habitat continuity and reducing isolation of native species populations. It plays a key role in supporting climate resilience and ecosystem stability across regional New South Wales through targeted restoration planting efforts guided by ecological research and conservation priorities set by local environmental authorities.
Soil health & sustainable media
Healthy soil is fundamental to high performing indoor plant hire solutions. Our Soil Enrichment Program (SEP) restores used growing media by reintroducing compost and organic nutrients supporting beneficial microbial activity and rebuilding soil biology. Research from CSIRO highlights the critical role soil microorganisms play in nutrient cycling plant health and overall ecosystem function. By recovering value from existing media rather than discarding it we reduce landfill waste and move towards a more circular growing system. This approach lowers reliance on synthetic fertilisers while improving plant resilience consistency and long-term health across our installations. Horticultural research highlights the importance of organic amendments and effective substrate management in supporting plant health and sustainable growing systems. Our approach also integrates ongoing monitoring of substrate performance ensuring that nutrient balance moisture retention and microbial diversity remain optimal throughout plant lifecycles. This helps maintain consistent visual quality across installations while reducing input requirements and improving efficiency across production cycles. It also supports circular economy principles by extending material lifespan and reducing reliance on virgin growing substrates contributing to more sustainable horticultural systems overall while supporting environmental responsibility across all operations and resilience outcomes.
Plant rotation, replacement & giving plants a second home
Our plant hire service maintains premium presentation through regular plant rotation and replacement schedules. When plants no longer meet our visual standards they are not discarded. Clients are offered the option to adopt plants they have grown attached to extending their lifecycle and emotional value. Remaining plants are donated to nursing homes charities and community organisations to share the wellbeing benefits of greenery more widely. This approach reduces waste extends plant life cycles and ensures every plant continues to deliver environmental and social value beyond its initial commercial use. Research into the indoor plant people relationship by Wiley Online Library highlights the positive psychological and wellbeing benefits of human interaction with indoor plants reinforcing the value of extending plant access beyond commercial environments. Our rotation strategy is designed to optimise aesthetic quality while ensuring plants are continuously maintained and rehabilitated rather than replaced unnecessarily. This reduces operational waste and supports a more sustainable service model across all client sites. It also allows us to monitor plant health over time improving longevity and performance outcomes while strengthening client satisfaction through consistently high-quality displays and responsible horticultural practices and circular lifecycle management.
Promoting biodiversity & ecological resilience
Our operations are supported by biodiversity protection at our Annangrove nursery in Sydney Hills District. The region contains around 1,000 native plant species and 300 native fauna species with more than 25,000 hectares of vegetation and several threatened ecological communities. We preserve existing bushland on site and avoid harmful pesticides to protect local ecosystems. This helps maintain habitat for native birds such as kookaburras and rainbow lorikeets along with possums gliders echidnas and a diverse range of insect populations. We also operate in wildlife friendly ways and collaborate with rescue organisations when native animals require assistance. Further information on the ecological value and conservation context of the Annangrove area is provided by The Hills Shire Council environmental management resources on the Annangrove Reserve. Our biodiversity initiatives also prioritise habitat connectivity across fragmented landscapes enabling species movement and genetic diversity within local ecosystems. By maintaining vegetation corridors and minimising disturbance we contribute to long term ecological resilience across urban and peri urban environments. These practices are guided by conservation science and align with regional biodiversity strategies that aim to protect and restore native habitats while supporting sustainable development outcomes across New South Wales and surrounding regions.
