BOTANICAL NAME: Strelitzia nicolai
COMMON NAME: Giant Bird of Paradise
DESCRIPTION: Trunk forming, clustering tree to 5m high with banana-like shiny green leathery leaves, having an obtuse base arranged in two ranks. Flowers outside only.
LIGHT/POSITION: High light only. May need an acclimatisation period if grown outside or in a shade house. Requires space for optimum visual effect.
WATERING: Water thoroughly and then allow to dry moderately between waterings.
CLEANING: Wipe leaves and stems with neem soap to remove dust. Do not oil.
FERTILISING: Usually not necessary, but only through the growing season with liquid fertiliser if required.
PRUNING: Remove dead stems close to the main trunk.
PRESENTATION: Dramatic plant for interior situations, especially in large foyer areas with high ceilings.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Good feature plant. Not recommended for long term situations.
